Bangsamoro women in Masiu, Lanao del Sur join cooperatives orientation
Cotabato City (15 June 2015) – Bangsamoro women in the municipality of Masiu in Lanao del Sur participated in a cooperatives orientation on Sunday, 14 June, at the Unda Memorial Agricultural School in Masiu.
The orientation is in line with the Regional Commission on Bangsamoro Women of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (RCBW-ARMM) economic program dubbed as WEELEP or Women Economic Empowerment and Livelihood Enhancement Program.
WEELEP is one of the three major programs of the RCBW-ARMM that include Gender Audit Program and Political Empowerment and Peace Program. These initiatives are aimed at enhancing, capacitating and encouraging women to access employment and livelihood opportunities including entrepreneurial skills.
Chairperson Sittie Jehanne Mutin of RCBW-ARMM said it is also designed to alleviate poverty in the region. “We prioritize livelihood program for the women,” Mutin said.
In 2015, there are 11 women’s cooperatives registered with the RCBW-ARMM. Women numbering 196 were trained on cooperativism, and 42 were trained on entrepreneurial skills. “This would boost the support we need from the ground to push forward women and peace agenda in the region,” Mutin added.
Norhata Mauna, a 46-year old resident of Barangay Langi Talub who wants to be a member of the women’s cooperative said these groups will eventually help raise her family’s income.
“Kapag naging certified member na po ako ng women’s coop, makakapandagdag kita na din sa amin (When I become a certified member of a women’s cooperative, I expect an improvement in our income),” Mauna said. (Bureau of Public Information)
