ARMM conducts information drive on disaster preparedness
Cotabato City (12 February 2015) – The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will conduct a massive information drive to improve the disaster preparedness of identified hazard-prone areas in the region beginning this month.
Ramil Masukat, ARMM’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) director, said they want to generate more awareness and equip communities with the knowledge and ability to respond to any disaster accordingly.
He said they’ve designed a set of information, education and communication materials with the help of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) that was unveiled this week in the town of Kabuntalan, Maguindanao.
The town regularly endures massive flooding that affects thousands of residents and vast areas of farmlands. In 2014, more than 20,000 individuals in 17 of its barangays were displaced due to the flood.
Masukat said Kabuntalan scored highest in terms of flood hazard in the whole province of Maguindanao.
“We know that educating our people and giving them all the helpful information can better prepare them for emergencies,” he said.
Large posters showing how people should react to flooding were placed in different conspicuous locations around the town.
Masukat they are going to be disseminating similar information materials in other hazard-prone areas of the region. (Bureau of Public Information)
